Copernicus Publications have adopted the C4DISC Joint Statement of Principles for diversity and inclusiveness

21 August 2020

Copernicus Publications fosters diversity and inclusiveness in scholarly communications: in journal editorial boards, reviewer teams, authorships, and also in its own group of staff members. To express this continuous effort, Copernicus signed the Joint Statement of Principles of the Coalition for Diversity & Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC).

The main principles are as follows:

  • eliminating barriers to participation, extending equitable opportunities across all stakeholders, and ensuring that our practices and policies promote equitable treatment and do not allow, condone, or result in discrimination;
  • creating and maintaining an environment that respects diverse traditions, heritages, and experiences;
  • promoting diversity in all staff, volunteers, and audiences, including full participation in programs, policy formulation, and decision-making;
  • raising awareness about career opportunities in our industries to groups who are currently underrepresented in the workforce;
  • supporting others in achieving diversity and inclusion within their organizations (e.g. scientific associations as our partners).

Managing Director Martin Rasmussen states that "when working with people, you always benefit from their diversity, their various backgrounds, ideas, and opinions. Especially for international collaboration in science, an inclusive approach is the only way to sustainably generate knowledge and ensure quality." Copernicus has always worked with scientific associations on journal publishing and conference organizing. Diversity and inclusiveness have become major topics, with many successful initiatives aiming to overcome traditional role models and limitations caused by excluding behaviour.
