Johannes was born and raised in Berlin and spent most of his life either in his hometown or China. He studied geoscience at the Technical University of Berlin with a particular focus on geochemistry and mineralogy. During his time as an undergraduate, he spent two years in China as a research fellow of the German National Academic Foundation. Apart from travelling up and down the country honing his accent, he has been involved in research projects dealing with Holocene climate reconstructions on the Tibetan Plateau. After returning to Berlin, his research shifted to more theoretical studies conducting computer simulations of deep earth processes. Upon completion of his PhD at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, he was involved in sustainable soil management for an NGO on the Canary Islands, subsequently alternating between Europe and China for research and academic exchange, until he finally started as an editor for Copernicus in early 2020.

Because Johannes has joined field trips digging up samples from frozen mountain lakes, just as much as he has been implementing molecular-scale simulation codes on Europe's largest supercomputers, he tends to cover a broad range of expertise in modern geosciences. He strives to act as a bridge between researchers and Copernicus Publications in all matters involving research data, Copernicus journals, and the EGUsphere. In his free time, Johannes is a passionate birdwatcher, mountaineer, and woodworker.
