Atmospheric Ozone: a Millennium Issue
	Editors: Onkar N. Singh and Peter Fabian Ozone, formed from three oxygen atoms, is a pungent smelling poisonous gas. It is a rare component of the Earth's atmosphere. In every ten million molecules of air, only about three are ozone. Most of ozone – about 90% of its total atmospheric abundance – is found in the middle atmosphere (the stratosphere), between the altitudes of 10 and 50 km (6-30 miles). This stratospheric ozone belt, populary called as ozone layer, absorbs all but the small fraction of the solar ultra-violet (UV-B) radiation, and thus prevents it from reaching the Earth's surface. High doses of UV-B have potentially harmful effects on human health, animals, plants, microorganisms, materials and air quality.
