Atmospheric conditions are known to be a factor of utmost importance for air traffic management. Combined with the continuous increase of the density of flights in the last years, and the expected continuation of this increase in the years to come, the advent of advanced navigation and localization means allowing independence from ground marks as well as the possibility of satellite-based communications between aircraft in flight, will even put a larger key role on meteorology. An improved meteorological service would benefit both terminal air traffic control (through meteorological tactical decision aids for the controllers), flight planning (through meteorological strategical decision aids for the flight planning officers), and in-flight decisions (through appropriate meteorological in-flight services). A number of projects have been set up in that respect, driven by such European authorities or organizations as the European Commission or Eurocontrol, following the future air navigation concepts of the International Civil Aviation Organization. This session will concern all aspects of the impact of meteorology on air traffic.
