During the past two decades, lithosphere research in Europe has been dominated by two major multinational and interdisciplinary projects, EGT (in the 1980s) and EUROPROBE (in the 1990s), both sponsored by ILP and ESF. EGT, working along a N-S Transect from the North Cape to Tunisia, brought together geophysicists, geologists and geochemists in a common effort to understand the European lithosphere. This opened the field for the integrated interdisciplinary research which is now being carried out under the umbrella of EUROPROBE. Its targets and participation are Pan-European, focused on the evolution of continental lithosphere from the Archaean to Present. This symposium aims at a comprehensive presentation of multidisciplinary, international lithosphere research in Europe. We encourage specifically papers dealing with the structure and evolution of the lithosphere integrating data from different geoscientific fields and demonstrating the wealth of international collaboration.
