OA4. Processes of vertical exchange in shelf seas:
Event Information
Vertical exchanges in continental shelf seas are principally controlled by the water column's turbulence characteristics which depend on, and affect, the water column's dynamics and density structure. The near bed, thermocline and near surface are regions of particular interest. Accurately estimating these exchanges, which also control vertical fluxes of particles and nutrients, is essential for predicting plankton ecosystem dynamics. Concurrent measurements of turbulence properties as well as of momentum, temperature, salinity, nutrients, particles, including aggregates, and phytoplankton throughout the water column are now being made which can test the robustness of physical and coupled physical-biological models over a range of turbulence environments.
