NH2.01 Meteorological and hydrological hazards: Diagnosis, modelling and forecasting extreme rainfall events and storms (co-sponsored by HS and OA)

Event Information

This symposium shall bring knowledge from natural hazard research, hydrology and meteorology together. It aims at stimulating an exchange of information on matters like - identification of "relevant" extreme events on different time- and spatial scales from the "user" point of view; - meteorological processes leading to extreme rainfall events / extreme rainfall periods and storms; - surface processes making a "relevant" event out of a meteorological event; - forecast of extreme events (nowcasting); - mechanisms of a long term variation of the risk for the occurrence of extreme events (including the identification of large scale atmospheric situations that have an enhanced risk for such events, climate change effects). A closer co-operation of scientist from the different fields of research is envisaged to lead to an improved understanding of the events, to improvements in the forecasting and the estimation of the risk of such events. It can thus foster progress towards a reduction of related costs (both in terms of human lives and economic losses). Papers dealing with both statistical and physically-based approaches, including meteorological models, are welcome.
