SE9.03 Lithospheric deformation: Initiation and abandonment of shear zones: consequences for the development of geological structures
Event Information
Shear zones at all scales, from microscopic to continental, are initiated and abandoned during deformation. Depending on factors such as their duration and accommodated displacement and on how further strain is accommodated, very different geological evolutions result. Rift basins, for instance, will increase or decrease their size depending on the way faults migrate. Migration of deformation is also common in earthquake sequences. In this session we want to discuss a) duration and amount of deformation in shear zones, b) patterns of strain migration. Contributions from field and experiments from all scales are encouraged.
