SE25. Geophysical and geochemical modelling of unrest episodes at volcanic areas:

Event Information

The aim of this session is to provide a forum for a large spectrum of work devoted to the study of volcanic processes. The field of volcanology, in the last decade, has undergone many progresses, and is evolving from a rather empirical science towards a quantitative one. Interest for physical volcanology has grown, and this science has better defined his methods and objectives. The goal, which appears now close, is to follow in some details all the processes starting in the shallow magma chamber, transporting magma at surface and driving the eruption. These processes should consider the magma-water interaction, both for direct contact and through heat exchange between magma and geothermal systems. The main goal of physical volcanology is to elaborate physical models for all these processes and to follow their evolution from geophysical and geochemical observations. This session is aimed to follow the main developments in this direction, and will try in particular to establish clear links between geophysical and geochemical observations, which are generally considered separately and not well integrated in volcanological models. In such a framework, contributions comparing and interpreting in a joint model both geophysical and geochemical observations will be particularly welcome, as well as works focused on the modeling of geothermal systems at volcanoes. Also encouraged are contributions on theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments about fluid transport processes, from the magma chambers to the surface, and eruptions. Contributions presenting observations and modeling of activity at individual volcanoes will be also particularly welcome, as well as works dealing with more complex volcanic environments, like explosive calderas. Finally, any contribution on new and improved techniques for geophysical and geochemical monitoring is strongly encouraged.
