SE1.01 Alpine and Mediterranean region: Tectonics, kinematics and dynamics of the Alpine-Mediterranean region
Event Information
Surrounded and strongly influenced by the relative movements of the large African and Eurasian plates, the Alpine-Mediterranean region is characterized by complex microplate interaction. As the structure of several older orogenic belts suggests, this likely presents a non- unique situation in geologic history and, hence, its study may serve as a model case for the evolution of larger continental plates. Recent geological and geophysical data allow in many cases precise description of the relation between surface kinematics and deep lithosphere-asthenosphere structure and dynamics. This symposium aims at a better understanding of past and ongoing large-scale deformation processes in the Alpine-Mediterranean realm. Oral and poster presentations are welcome that deal with evolution, structure, kinematics, mechanics, and dynamics. We particularly invite contri- butions that combine different methodologies, perspectives, or data sets.
