HS03.04 Hydrological functions of ecosystem: Nutrient management and nutrient removal
Event Information
The use of chemical fertiliser, to satisfy the rapidly increasing requirements for global food production, has grown so fast that the distribution of Nitrogen and other nutrients on earth has changed in a dramatic and sometimes dangerous way. Eutrophication and related problems caused by the uncontrolled discharge of nutrients in the environment is an increasing phenomenon world-wide. Past and ongoing attempts to control the problem have not generated the anticipated effects. It is currently accepted that technological approaches to concentrate nutrients need to be combined with other actions (reduction of inputs, legislation, re-use) to form integrated nutrient management strategies. This section invites contributions that deal with specific aspects of nutrient cycling, nutrient uses, environmental impacts and nutrient control. Papers on integrated approaches of nutrient management are especially welcomed.
