For its publications Copernicus is using only professional publishing software and state-of-the-art computers and servers. For editing graphics and illustrations Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop are applied and for editing plain text articles Adobe InDesign. For the production of scientific articles, however, PDFLaTeX is applied exclusively.

The main advantages of applying PDFLaTeX to e-publishing are:

• LaTeX is an open-source software and it is applied by 10-30% of the authors working in the mathematical and natural sciences
• Copernicus uses an intelligent “WORD2TeX” server transforming text, tables and equations compiled in WORD and with help of the WORD Equation Editor into LaTeX
• Straightforward editing of text, tables, equations and formulas with the same software
• Transforming any article into any style and format without using any additional software, such as e.g. Page Maker, InDesign or Quark X Press
• Straightforward incorporation of pdf files of graphics, pictures and illustrations into the text
• Easy transformation from LaTeX to HTML for web applications (TeX2HTML)
• Easy transformation of LaTeX files into PDF files
• Ability to use these PDF files for direct upload onto the web and for printing on paper by applying the technology of digital printing (print-on-demand).
